Re: [APD] Re: Growing Glosso Update

Hi,

Although my glosso has only been growing well for the past 3 weeks, i'll
volunteer my suggestions....

1. yes, light is important, but you'll know within days if you have enough,
that's when the glosso will start growing up or sideways.
2. CO2 is very important! The difference I had between diy yeast and a
pressurized system was night and day. Now i'm getting big, plump, healthy,
beautiful leaves with my pressurized system, where b4 i was wondering what
the big deal with glosso was. Afterall, plants need carbon as building
materials. I was at Big Al's (lfs) the other day and they had just got a new
shippment of tropica glosso... i'm proud to say that those ones looked
sickly compared to mine ;)
3. Nitrates: they love it. I keep it around 10 ppm. Don't overdose cause
it's bad for the fish!
4. and for that extra touch.... small substate. I use Red Sea Florabase now.
B4, i tried the seachem flourite but i thought the rocks were just too big.

You should look in the February postings for the responses to my cry for
help about glosso. Everybody was so helpful.

Anyways, about the lighting argument.... I understand how that article i
referenced earliar does not provide a cohesive argument..... Just that
with my lighting system i can only have the option of either 65 watts or 130
watts. With 65 watts (+3wpg), my colour plants start losing their colour
(although the glosso still grew well.) With 130 watts (6.5 wpg), my plants
look amazing (in my humble opinion, the plants in Big Al's plant tanks got
nothing on mine. don't even bother to look at those tanks when i'm in the
stores now.) and have had no bad side effects yet (fingers crossed.)

My thinking is that the plants require a certain minimum amount of light.
obviously, if you have a 1 gallon tank, 3 watts would not be enough for the
tank. Just
as if you had a 200 gallon tank, 600 watts would be too much. I just think
there's been too much attached to this 3 wpg rule. In hydroponics, when they
grow plants with artificial lights, they use MH's and there aren't any
gallons involved in the equation. The purpose of the lights for the plants
are to try to simulate an energy sourse normally provided for the sun, isn't
it? The natural habitats of these plants are in extremely sunny areas, and
NOT underwater. Yes, some plants don't require a lot of light, but some do.
All i know is now with my lighting system, i have no fear of any plant! No
flames please. I haven't researched or tested this idea, it's just something
that occured to me. And even considering this, 130 watts may be overkill,
but 65 watts (+3wpg) is definitely not enough!
