[APD] Bounces

I receive the list messages in digest form. In the To field, it reads
aquatic-plants-bounces+d_guynn=sbcglobal.net at actwin.com. Is this normal, or
is there a problem with my e-mail?

Just letting you know that I've updated some of the info on my website. It
now has up-to-date calculations for the amount of ferts I'm adding (adding a
bit more now) plus I've outline the "Tom Barr method" on there too, which I
might give a go some day.

Cheers

The Dallas-Fort Worth Aquatic Plant Club will be having an all weekend field
trip to Houston, TX the weekend of April 30 - May 2. We would like to invite
anyone that is interested to come along and enjoy the activities we have
lined up.

In the style of the Tom Barr Plantfest last year, this will be very
informal. Everyone that comes will be responsible for making all their own
arrangements including transportation to the various venues throughout the
weekend.

Activities planned (but subject to change) are a visit to Mike and Jeff
Senske's ADG Gallery, an aquascping class by Luis Navarro, visits to see
some of Luis' aquariums, a party at Valerie's and a chance to see her
aquarium, visits to the local pet shops, a possible trip to Japanese
Gardens, and light native plant and fish collecting let by a local
biologist. The guided collecting will be in the same aquatic preserve that
Claus Christensen was taken to before the 2002 AGA Convention that everyone
wishes they could have gone on :-) Luis tells me we will be going to better
places though!

Sorry this does not give people that might be interested much time to plan,
but we have been plagued by illnesses that have kept us from getting things
organized.

More information will be posted at a later date.

Thanks to all who have replied both on and off list. I've had the doors wide
open on the bottom and a fan blowing warm air in since Wednesday night. One
interesting note is that this should be acting kind of like a substrate
heater, warming the bottom of the tank. I haven't seen any difference in
plant growth.

One thing about the stand is that it has a piece of plywood which covers the
entire bottom, so I cannot see or feel if the carpet/pad/flooring under the
stand is wet. The plywood, and the stand itself, do not look as if they have
warped much, although I have to admit I hadn't looked that closely at them
before this happened.

Tomorrow I will be doing another water change. We are thinking about moving
the tank and stand while it is mostly empty to get a look at the damage; is
that worth doing, or is the stress to the tank not worth the risk? (I don't
usually change the water quite this often, but I am leaving town on Saturday
night & won't be back for over a week, and I am *thisclose* to wiping out
the last bits of BBA).

Someone asked what kind of Fluval was involved; it was the reactor, not the
filter, that I put together incorrectly, and the filter is an Eheim.

HI gang-
Been gone a long time. Too busy to fool with a lot of this stuff.
I have a couple of tanks that were at one time planted and have the
lighting necessary, but have been scraped clean and set up bare-bottom for
angel fry
raising. Since I'm really busy, and sometimes the tanks hold other fish
long-term, it would be great if I could put some plants in pots and move
them
around as needed to help maintain water quality between changes. So what to
use
for a substrate?
While plants are commercially raised in pots using rock wool, that is
primarily for plants in an emerse state. What about immersed? Would I be
best
with gravel/clay substrate, flourite, htbass, or an amano style pumice
gravel/peat/clay deal? Remember, the CO2 will be unsupplemented, and the
plants need
to metabolize(grow) in order to be helpful.
Also, any preferences about pots? Whatever I use will have to be raised
off the bottom a little so when there are fry in the tank they don't get
stuck. The easiest approach for that is marbles and silicone adhesive. I
am
thinking either standard terra cotta pots or possibly strips of plastic
rain
gutter capped off.
    Tanks,
    Bob Dixon

Peat will brown the water pretty heavily for a while. This might turn off
your workmates. A small box filter full of carbon, changed on a r egular
basis
would be a great idea, or a carbon chamber in whatever filter you use.

I've put a half an inch roughly on the glass before putting
in 2 or more inches of Onyx Sand or Eco-complete or
Flourite and never had a problem with the water turning
brown. It won't leach fast enough to visibly stain the
water unless you bring it up into the water column. Anyway,
that's my experience.

To: <aquatic-plants at actwin_com>

I'm setting up about 10-12 ten gallon tanks for breeding and raising
purposes. Some may be planted tanks, others not. My question is what size
air pump would I need to be able to handle ten small sponge filters in these
tanks? Thanks for your suggestions.
