[APD] Re: OUCH!

I have found vinegar to be a bit unreliable for detecting carbonates in gravel. Depending on the history, it may give no "fizzing" at all, while good old cheap (if more dangerous) pool acid, aka muriatic, aka hydrochloric, will always produce visible bubbles on substrates, rocks or ornaments that tend to harden your water. Just my $0.02, YMMV.

White vinegar works as well as any other acid, and is easier to come by -- its probably in your kitchen.
