Yes a lttle goes a long way with sanding the ends. 

And this further reduces their energy efficiency by
reducing the effective light output. Some light scatters to
places where you don't want it to go and some is lost in
multiple restrikes. So if you try for wide dispersion,
e.g., with sanding, thake this into account when figuring
how mamny LEDs you'll need to light your tank.
