  I think the O2 from the plants is the most likely cause to the "diurnal
gurgling" (Scott, you're posts are a 'gas' ;-).  If it was a leak in the
o-ring, or the filter media, then I'd hear the gurgling all of the time, and
not only when the lights are on.
