Bikes have to follow the exact same rules and regulations that any motor
vehicle does.  The main problem is that when a bike and a car go head to
head, the bike - and therefore the cyclist - loses.  

Certainly more cyclists could be more thoughtful (most typically are) -
but the vast majority of the problem is the motorists and their lack of
knowledge of traffic laws and how they are required to share the road.
Roads with wide shoulders or outright bike lanes are a great way to
share the road w/o endangering lives.
