rotala macrandra question

Just today I got some rotala macrandra in the mail
(thanks Dave Millman!).

It's a plant I have had before.  The question I have
is that this particular macrandra has variegated
leaves (with greens and whites along with the red)
while what I had didn't (even at lower lights, it
would just fade towards green).

Are they different varieties?  Or just grown in
different conditions?
