I'm not sure what the recommended levels are for flow rate, but I have a gurgling Fluval 303 that works fine on my 29G. If circulation is the concern you can just add a power head to help keep things moving if you end up with a smaller filter -Travis Whose family is enjoying the smoked bacon from the pig my son caught at the fair last fall.
