I have seen the product Volcanite, it is a trade name for a porus
substrate. They make several types, most are used on sports fields due
to the ability to allow water to pass through and remain dry and usable
on top, such as the base lines for baseball fields. I assume that the
absorption property is what makes it a candidate for an aquarium
substrate, but have had no first hand experience with it.In the
newsgroup, rec.aquaria.freshwater.plants, this same product has been
discussed if one would care to search the archives.
