Eric Wahlig  pointed out that a small hole above the
waterline in the water return line will break the siphon if
the pump stops -- breaking the siphon on that hose will
prevent a reverse flow through the filter system.

If you're going to rely on this method, be sure to
periodically clean the hole.  It can become plugged with
the crud that builds up in filter tubes, which will make
the hole ineffective.
