RE: adding first layer laterite

Mark asked about adding laterite to the substrate of an already set up
aquarium. Although I see you have already done this, I would like to
mention a method that I read about in _Ecology of the Planted Aquarium_ (D.
Walstad, Echinodorus, 1999). On page 138 Diana mentions adding soil to an
already set up aquarium by making soil packets. These are made by wrapping
soil [laterite] in wax paper, taping it closed with a piece of Scotch tape,
and burying these packets deep in the gravel. The packets are then broken
open with a sharp object, such as a knife, which allows the soil to
permeate into the surrounding gravel. The wax paper disintegrates over time.
