Petrified wood, etc

I've been trying to use '"bog logs" for a year or so, for attaching ferns and 
moss.  I use a horrid very fine gauge nearly invisible fish line which drives 
me crazy.  People mention staples.  I've tried but staples won't penetrate 
the bog log (and I have no idea what a bog log is, except its what my very 
small town lfs carries).  What type of wood is useful for plants, will take 
staples and can be purchased at a reasonable price.
