When I was growing up in New York lady bugs where red and decorated with
black dots.

Japanese Beetle were black with a shiny hue of blue, gold and green.

Neither of them were known as "biters".

We used to collect hundreds of both and keep them in jars.  I never got bit.

On the other hand.  The only thing that ever "bit" me when I was a kid was
this Freshwater Planted Aquaria thing..
