The really difficult issue is the species of the trees themselves. Mahogany is a treasured species of wood, particularly to the furniture industry. It makes up a large part of the rain forest. If it is cut and harvested, it must (theoretically) be processed through sustainable forestry practices. If it is just clear cut and burned, it doesn't. Ironically, the current system actually encourages the burning of a precious resource.
