Hair algae fish

I really think this is a misconception.  I have mollies, and Sword tails 
that thrive in my tapwater.  The GH is @5-6 and the KH is 3.  It comes 
out of the tap at about 1/1 or less.  Before I got serious about plants, 
I kept the live bearers in the unadjusted tapwater.  All are about 3 
years old now.  I also have never added salt.
