CO2 loss on overflow tanks

I picked up a used fancy reef type acrylic tank for a song, buffed the scratches out of it and have tried to set it up as a planted tank but seem to be losing a lot of CO2 from the overflow. This tank has the built inoverflow box with predrilled holes. The water flowing over the overflow box edge is pretty laminar but when the water goes into the standpipe it pulls a lot of air with it. At the discharge into the sump there is a large amount of bubbling. Is there anyway to prevent this air suction and keep my CO2 in the water?

Thanks,

Dave K
