Avoiding copper in a planted tank is good advice.  

Formalin isn't green unless a dye is added to make it so. 
With ich treatments it's usually malachite green, which is
a strong  aniline dye.  If formalin were green, wakes would
look like St. Patrick's day, if you know what I mean.
