No, the enclosures are not hinged - they are just big boxes. They are also 
very low, so the lights sit very close to the tank. I have mine up on some 
pieces of wood & have to slide it back & forth to open the tank for 
maintenance & feeding. I keep thinking I'll get a custom enclosure (I hhave 
a bow-front) made soon.
