Hi all,
Besides the twezers and scissors, one of the handiest tools I have are the 
cheap white plastic putty knives you can buy from Home Depot paint 
departmentand the like.

They are excellent for removing algae off the tank glass below the gravel 
line without getting substrate between them and the glass, eliminating the 
risk of scratching the tank glass, and the white color shows off any algae 
present. Their edges are angled to a point, which makes them all the more 
effective. They sometimes will get off stubborn stuff a pad will not.
