Some of us -- myself included -- find that we need to supplement phosphate 
to ultimately keep our plants happy.  In my case, I have found that the 
regular addition of KH2PO4 and KNO3 keeps filamentaceous green algae from 
overtaking my 50 gal. medium-high light/CO2 augmented tank.  I don't know if 
I'd need to supplement macronutrients without the high light, but I wanted 
the high light to grow red and other light demanding plants.
