Hmmm... I'm not an expert, but doesn't a laterite substrate with an
eartheater sound like trouble? I bet that eartheater is kicking all those
nutrients into the water column causing those problems.
Didn't you say you still had two ten gallon tanks? Maybe try moving the
eartheater in there...
