As someone who uses driftwood only for Pleco health and hates the look of most rocks, allow me to insert the possibility that there are other options. I think a well-placed Sword or Nymphaea can be quite as eye-catching and much less jarring that the average chunk of sudden wood or rock amongst the plants. Admittedly the obtrusive look can be a useful and beautiful ideal, but I would certainly not mark it as 'fundamental.'
BTW, I agree about the tank specs thing, although if you don't want to use shop-lites a lot of the 6 footers are very nicely proportioned.
