I don't know if they need it or not but mine will go dormant every so often. No certain time or set of circumstances I am aware of. They usually come back as good or better than before. Evidently when they feel like it.
I finally had to pull the ones I had in my 10 gallon tanks. Too big. The bulbs are still lying in the bathroom window plantbox.
IMO, they are as beautiful a plant as one could wish for. Foolproof.
