What do you have in PO4?  I probably have the same type of water you have.  
I found with respect to algae control that adding KNO3 is not enough; that 
just encourages algae (including the gray-green-blue staghorn-like algae you 
speak of).  The addition of PO4 did the trick and the alage went away in the 
space of a week.
