Eheim 2126 and outside the tank heaters

The 2026 is rated for 251 gph, but that's the pump output with no load.
Connected with the filter, containing new media, the flow rate is,
according to Eheim, about 170 gph. Add any turns, connectors, mild
coating of gunk in the tubes after a few weeks, slow buildup of
material in the filtering media over time, reactors or UV units and
the rate will drop substantially below 170 gph--perhaps as low as 100
gph, depending on how often you clean the tubes and rinse the media.

The 2028 is rated for 277 gph, but that's the pump output with no load.
Connected with the filter, containing new media, the flow rate is,
according to Eheim, about 200 gph. Add any turns, connectors, mild
coating of gunk in the tubes after a few weeks, slow buildup of
material in the filtering media over time, reactors or UV units and the
rate will drop substantially below 200 gph--perhaps as low as 150 gph,
depending on how often you clean the tubes and rinse the media.

Given that the filtered water mixes with the tank water as more tank
water is drawn into the filter, some water is refiltered before other
tnak water passes through the filter at all. So a complete change-over
of the tank water probably takes about 5-8 hours at 100 gph. I haven't
pulled out the formula and done the calculus, but as a rough guess,
that's probably pretty close enough given the wide margin of error do
to all the other factors affecting filtering needs-- fishload, feeding,
thoroughnes of circulation within the tank, etc. So the smaller Eheim
should be plenty for a 75 gal. tank. If in doubt, and you can easily
afford it, get the larger Eheim, and clean the media less often than
the smaller filter. You can adjust the flow downwards if you think the
larger model is too much flow.
