They could be just variations in a species or they
could be totally different species. I have the dwarf
bristlenose at home (a breeding pair I bought with a
bunch of babies) and the male and female are nearly
identical in size. The male will usually have some big
spiny "bristles" (not like the ones on the snout,
these are hard and can hurt) near his gills. THey are
less pronounced in the female.
