Nice questions. Certainly not the last word on the several subjects
you bring up but a very good source of information is Ms. Walstad's
book, Ecology of the Planted Aquarium : A Practical Manual and
Scientific Treatise for the Home Aquarist.
Ms. Walstad, by the way, follows an approach rather different from the
expensive, high tech, rapid growth, high nutrients one. However, both
methods are described and most of the material applies to either.
