I had this happen also. I think typical pressure is 800-1000 when filled. 
Mine will go over 1000 on warm days. When you are checking for leaks, make 
sure you cover the regulator itself, my regulator has parts that screw 
together, they got a bit loose over the years, and got  a bit leaky.
