I have often wondered about this, especially for small tanks.   Here is 
what I uncovered today:

Water in equilibrium with CO2 at 760mm Hg (full CO2 pressure at one 
atmosphere) has about 1500ppm CO2.

So if you add flat soda water to your tank at the rate of one part per 
hundred, that will give you 15ppm extra CO2.

If the CO2 is from a fresh soda water bottle, figure about twice that much 
(probably a bit less).

Don't use water that has salt added (read the label carefully).

Be sure to start conservatively and measure, measure, measure; a pH meter 
would be most useful.
