I use a brine shrimp net. If I were you, I'd get some
daphnia from the lake or a starter culture. Release
them into something like half a wine barrel, large
buckett, or wheel barrel and out it in partial shade
when spring comes around. That way, you'll be able to
collect mosquitos too. And, it will be much easier
than getting the from a lake.
I try to avoid getting the water from the barrel in my
tank though...
