Caridina japonica

These shrimp are very susceptible to chemicals such as
fertilizers and insecticides. The rice paddies and
drainage canals that are their summertime habitat
become very warm. The water does have a constant flow
and is actively oxygenated by the action of the water
pumps. The shrimp commonly come into the paddies
through the outflow pipes and most commonly are found
dead or dying whenever the fields are sprayed with
insecticides/pesticides or are heavily dosed with
fertilizers. Moh ebi (shrimp) and sugi ebi as well as
crayfish are more resiliant to these chemicals and are
rapidly supplanting the Yamato Pond Shrimp in the
"Tambo" (paddy culture) ecosystem.
