ID of pest plant

My tanks have been visited by a plant I have not been
able to ID. It is long and stringy, small, without
roots. The stem is thinner than riccia, and at
approximately every centimeter there are two small
needle-like leaves (more like mini-stems) of probably
half-centimeter length. It has no roots, and grows
by elongation. It tends to intercalate among plants.
Any broken bit of the plant forms another string. It
grows very rapidly, and is difficult to get rid of.

If anyone is familiar with this plant, I would be
interested if they have tried ridding their tanks of
it by any method other than diligent manual removal.
