How about adding another possibility:

Bottle + Reg + Needle Valve + Glass diffuser
- -----------------------------
PRO simple, not intrusive in tank, self-contained
CON none known   ;)

Bonus points if this actually prevents CO2 dumping, and <light humor
on> an extra
gold star if you connect the needle valve directly to the regulator

off>. Maybe this would be a good opportunity to do the mini-dump
experiment of
turning off the main tank valve that was talked about earlier.
