Rod, you can either raise the lights higher or you will have to use fan. I've found the muffin fans irritating also. Try the Icecap variable speed fan. It is a bit pricey but is supposedly very quiet and only runs when the heat reaches a certain limit. I haven't tried it but am planning to get one soon. I've heard lots of good things about them.
