John,

My 125G planted tank has never been better since turning off the UGF
about 20 months ago. It is still under the gravel, one of these days
I'll tear it down... <g> 
The reason?
Every time I cleaned the tank and vacuumed the gravel, my phosphate
levels would sky rocket. Had numerous algae problems. Since I've turned
the system off, my problems have disappeared. In fact, I regularly
(every 2 - 3 months) dose the tank with extra phosphate.
Just my .02 worth.
