I've had the stuff growing like crazy in my tanks and when I clean them out 
throw the Java Moss in bowls with the dirty tank water.  It grows just 
great.  I have one tub outside that has been sitting out there for over a 
year in Seattle (through the winter) it it is still going strong (with some 
algae mixed in).  Had a bowl of Java moss on a table by a window inside and 
it did really well.  The cats drank out of it.  As long as the light isn't 
too bright and there is a little nutrient in the water it should do just 
fine.
