I have been using eggcrate for a few years. I did not do it to increase light. It was something to hold the lights out of the water and keep the fish in the tank. One tip I would have for people thinking of using it, don't cut the eggcrate, if you can avoid it. It is much easier to use pliers or an adjustable wrench and crack the segments off around the piece you need.
