For DIY, computer heat sinks can be used to diffuse the heat. The white
grease used as a heat conductor between computer processors and their heat
sinks works good on glass.

The drawbacks are the appearance, and some loss of "transparent" surface,
although one can piggyback heatsinks, and create t-shape structures that
dissipate well without taking to much surface, and reduced "mobility" of the
glass, if you regularly remove it from the top of the tank.
