An interesting experiement, which might shed some more light on the issue of
how useful a substrate heater is, would be to take a 48" long tank and set
it up with a heating cable on one side and none on the other. Use a low
plexiglass divider to isolate the two halves of the substrate (only as high
as the substrate is deep). Set it up, plant each side with a similar range
of species and watch it for a few years.

One tank might not provide any data which was statistically valid, but I'm
sure it would give us food for argument for another few years.....<grin>
