Lighting large tank

Tell us more about this interesting tank!  I hope you can access it from all 4
sides, otherwise it's time to buy a diving mask and aspirin for the backaches.

Following Victor Eng, suppose that a 400w MH does illuminate only 24"x24". 
Maybe that's enough.  Do you really need intense lighting at the edges?  (if you 
answer no, won't you have less algae to scrape?)

I saw a square tank once that had MH in the middle and purplish Gro-Lux-type
bulbs along the outer edges.  The cardinal tetras looked great!
