Hi Paul, You can put just about anything over Flourite, but why? I think it is fairly attractive. I think sand is out b/c it will probably sift down, but you could use onyx gravel if dark is what you are looking for. Otherwise, I would think any aquarium safe gravel would be OK....... Good luck, Don
