RE: Flag Fish and Reef Tanks

The trade in freshwater fish is perhaps not as dramatic as blasting a reef
or poisoning fish with cyanide, but in many ways freshwater fish are treated
the same as saltwater. Many of our favorite fish (SAEs, Amano Shrimp, most
of the more colorful and expensive Loricarids, tetras and cory cats, amoung
others) are wild caught, but few people even realize that. I suppose I
should be better informed myself since I am not even sure what the
regulations are in the countries where these fish are caught, and more to
the point what safeguards there are on the wild populations of these fish.
But if you are worried about salt water fish because of ecological concern,
I hope you are also paying close attention to the freshwater varieties you
use in your tanks.

And that doesn't even begin to address the potential hazards of noxious
introduced plants and animals, which are far more likely to spread from
freshwater aquaria to local rivers and lakes than from Saltwater aquaria.
