Well, when people with sunburned necks are faced with pronouncing something like 
"casuiarina", they often decide to call it "pine" instead. And there already is 
an "Austrian Pine", so the only thing left was "Australian". Isn't etymology 
fascinating? 

And, besides, wouldn't you tend to call it "rina"?  You know, like "roo"?
