Carmen responds:
Clowns of this size (you got some big fishies) will enthusiastically burrow
their heads into the substrate up to their gills in search of tasty worms
and snails.  If you have a decent amount of mulm in your substrate, the
clowns are most likely just kicking it up to make the "funk".  Most of
their activity will of course be at night when they are at their friskiest.
You might reduce the effects of the disruption by carefully vacuuming the
substrate surface in areas between the plants to remove excess mulm.
