Fermented barley straw ?

Been looking at the Dupla AlgoControl reactor which is packed
with fermented barley straw.

The only references I can find to fermented straw is in the
context of improving cattle feed.
Here straw is fermented by wetting with a microbial 'juice',
covered in plastic and a layer of soil to produce anaerobic
conditions for 30 days.

Presumably this 'juice' could just be soil mixed with water
to seed the bacteria.

Anyone have any other information on the technique used by
Dupla ???
