I don't know how you might go about making a DIY flocculent.  Hagen sells
two flocculents - one mostly for algae and one mostly for sediments.
Other manufacturers also sell them.

I've never noticed any stress symptoms in the fish after using the Hagen
products, but I suppose that's a possibility.  As always, follow the
manufacturer's instructions.
