I can't tell you what the difference is, but I use swimming pool DE in my 
vortex filter and it works just fine.  I'm gonna guess that the expensive 
Vortex stuff is more uniform in size and has less dust.  But the dust just 
gets trapped in the filter like any other particulates, so what does it 
matter?
