lethal nitrate levels

no, nitrates may not be _good_ for your fish, but they would have to
accumulate to _very_ high levels (>500 ppm?, > 1000 ppm?) to be lethal to
most fish, and under normal conditions, some other chemical accumulating
with nitrate would kill your fish first.

this being said, it's probably true that _some_ spp of fish are especially
sensitive to nitrates, but even these would probably not be killed at ~100
ppm for limited periods.
