I disagree. A sump system can be designed with barely no surface disruption.
You only need two elements: (i) forget about overflow boxes and use a bulkhead
fitting on a hole in the back glass pane at water level heigth, and (ii) place 
the other end of the hose underwater in the sump. The only place where water
will splash is inside the hose itself, which has a very small cross section
area.
