I've had a few filteress tanks over the years. While I've been
happy with them, ones with filters seem to do better. A sponge
filter is not enough, even a big one, a cheap (used?) ouside
cannister filter with mechical media seems to work great.

I don't know anybody with heating cables that swears by them.
